Medicare Late Enrollment Penalties

At Extra Help Agency, we are driven by teaching and helping those in our communities.

Understanding Medicare:

The Importance of Timely Enrollment

Medicare imposes late enrollment penalties on individuals who delay signing up for certain parts of Medicare without having other credible coverage. These penalties are added to your monthly premiums and can last for as long as you have Medicare coverage. The penalties aim to encourage timely enrollment and ensure the sustainability of the Medicare program.

Enrolling in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is crucial to avoid unnecessary penalties. The IEP typically spans seven months, beginning three months before you turn 65, including your birth month, and ending three months after. Failing to enroll during this window can lead to lifelong financial penalties, increasing your monthly premiums and impacting your healthcare budget.

Our Mission & Vision.

We are driven by teaching and helping those in our communities. The Extra Help Agency was created because of the need at the local level to Help Medicare Beneficiaries Understand Medicare Benefits. Explaining Medicare in a way that makes sense and helping beneficiaries understand what all of their options are, that’s our focus, our mission, and our primary business.

Breaking Down Penalties:

Part A, B, and D: What You Need to Know

Understanding Medicare enrollment timelines and penalties can be complex. Extra Help Agency is here to guide you through the process, ensuring you make informed decisions and avoid costly penalties.

Part A
If you’re not eligible for premium-free Part A and delay enrollment, you’ll pay a penalty of 10% of the monthly premium. This penalty applies for twice the number of years you could have had Part A but didn’t sign up.
Part B

Delaying enrollment in Part B without qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period results in a penalty of 10% for each full 12-month period you were eligible but didn’t enroll. This amount is a lifetime penalty added to your monthly premium.

Part D

If you go 63 or more consecutive days without creditable prescription drug coverage after your Initial Enrollment Period, you’ll face a penalty. This penalty is calculated as 1% of the national base beneficiary premium multiplied by the number of uncovered months, and it’s a lifetime penalty added to your monthly premium.
